As the days get shorter and our window for getting the sunshine we need to thrive shrinks, seasonal depression can arise causing a variety of symptoms. It is normal during the colder months to feel the desire to retreat and hunker down. We, typically, spend more time indoors, perhaps eating more and moving less.
How the seasons affect us varies from person to person, but some people really struggle and find themselves battling with bouts of depression. While many may go undiagnosed, it is worth checking in with ourselves to take inventory of how we are feeling. We should extend grace to what is moving through us, acknowledging that what we are feeling may go beyond our immediate control.
Symptoms of seasonal depression include loss of interest in activities you enjoy, fatigue, sluggishness, sleeping too much, overeating, difficulty concentrating, and feeling helpless.
There are several ways we can counteract seasonal depression to ease symptoms until we meet Spring again. Getting outside to get some fresh air and sunshine is a quick and easy way to give your mind, body, and spirit, time to regulate themselves. The goal is to help boost our serotonin levels and ensure we are getting the nutrients we need to feel our best.
As our routines may change during the winter months, our bodies may become more prone to holding tension, causing us pain. While we may move less, sleep more, and eat differently, all of these changes can result in increased levels of pain. Daily walks, stretching, and bodywork can do wonders with giving ourselves the chance to release and relax.
It takes commitment to put in the effort of doing what we can to love and care for ourselves. Perhaps the holiday season brings you a sense of joy and excitement, while other may experience anxiety and the desire to withdraw.
We encourage you to continue your wellness and healing journey, regardless of the season! Come in and see us at SerendipPT to boost your serotonin levels and take some time for yourself!
